Day 11 - Route 66 Day 9 Monday March 15, traveled 354.5 miles today

As you can see we got about an inch of heavy snow. That was a blessing as I went in and got a pool towel and cleaned off the snow and the residual bird droppings. Off we go and in front of us are 6 motorcycles, people dressed heavily, better, because they ran 75 MPH.

We decided to take the trip to Santa Fe for a noon lunch at Mariscos. Recommended by George G. and we were glad of it. The inside has that great Spanish feel to it, the colors bright and homey. Shirleen ordered a coffee, some cinnamon flavor to it, I a Agave wine Margareta – simply delicious. Shirleen’s tilapia fillet with a light red sauce on it, I fish tacos
half inch pieces of spicy crisp fish, lettuce, a slice of onion, slice of tomato and a slice of avocado. both with rice and flavored fries, maybe a rice flour dip before frying.
First came the chips, a smooth light avocado with green chilis, another dip of salsa – coarse chopped, and a light creamy bean dip. Thanks George G.

We decided to go on a short run on route 66, oh yes; there is snow around but not much of any on the highway. A little different on these side streets we are now on. We cross an intersection and travel on, well now iy if getting a little difficult, snow ridges of about 3 to 4 inches, some ice, some water, to top it off the road is leading us down into a canyon with a good pitch to it. Few cars, well actually no cars just two SUV’s and a pickup. At about 5 miles in two vehicles are coming toward us and a sign said the road is narrowing – I thought how much more? I lowered the window and the first one flew by and pushed a bunch of snow thru the window. Thank goodness the second one stopped. He said that this is a dead end canyon and that a car like mine shouldn’t be down here. I agreed and backed up a ways and found a place to turn around. Now the climb up the hill with its S-curves and icy patches. I said just go slow and you’ll make it. Well we did but a little exciting.

Down to Albuquerque for a tool around town. We found the different store fronts that were still available with there neon tubes and art deco look to some store fronts. Then in front of us was this turquoise white toped 57 Corvette.
We did come alongside and they also were going on route 66 from Tulsa to Flagstaff. We travelled a couple miles together but when we went to walk across a roadside bridge they scooted on.

We again did one of those under the I40 thru a culvert but twice the size and concrete deck. We went over the continental divide at the 7,245 foot point outside Gallup.

Our destination was Gallup. We looked at a couple of places on the handout we picked up. We then saw an add for one of the hotels we saw on the DVD last night. It was used by many movie stars, as 12 movies were shot in this area.
We pulled into the Hotel El Rancho Hotel and Motel built in 1937 in downtown Gallop and we booked in. We got Betty Grables room, as each room is named for a star that stayed there once. It is decorated real heavy, wood beams a foot thick, walls of brick and the outside was rocked. We ate a light dinner, Shirleen an bowl of Florintine soup, I two tamales tried half with green and red sauce, the red was hot spicy but good, beans, rice and tortillas came with it. Not sure what to do with them but I out some of the tamale on it and gobbled it down. Jerry
