Day 15 - Route 66 Day 13 Friday March 19, traveled 169.8 miles today, 30 to go Santa Monica

tonight at a first time Travelodge E. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena CA.
tired again try tomorrow. Jerr

We started the morning with breakfast at the Inn. The reason to bring this up, as most breakfasts are the same, this one had scrambled eggs with cheese and fresh tomatoes, a really good way to make them. Another difference with a hotel breakfast was that the utinsels we not stuck in a container, they were stacked in a device that you turned a handle and the slid down for you to pick up, hard to explain but it gives you the sanitary feel.

As we head out along the open valley with the Santa Fe rail lines running alongside then sometimes off in the distance, many trains are pulling containers across the US from here. We travel thru little towns still wondering what these people do for a living. In the open plains sage brush is growing through the sandy feature of the earth. Yesterday a tumbleweed tumbled right across the hood and windshield of the car just frightened us a little it was so quick.
Route 66 was spray painted on the road along the way infrequently and made you wonder if you lost it.

More art along the road.

We then had to turn on I40 for a while and off on the next exit. Turned out it was an exit to soon but we didn’t realize it for sometime. What a neat mistake, I again was a able to road course and cruise the hairpin turns going up and up, about 8 miles, the San Bernardino mountains. The switchbacks were down to 10 MPH. The desolate road breaks into more hairpin turns but as we climb massive trees and the beauty of nature again extols itself. We wind thru populated areas, small but beautifully kept houses, some right along the wayside, parking on their sides. We reach the peak and the sign says 10 miles of decent. At least these curves were never less than 30 miles an hour. They were right about the 10 miles.

We are now in town traffic and on the route again. The stop lights are only a couple blocks apart and really slow you down. We passed stopped and turned around to see the last orange drink stand left, Bono’s historic orange. Shirleen remembered these.

It is now 3:30 and the last we ate was 8am. We are looking for a couple of restaurants that are noted on the guide. We spot The Magic Lamp Inn, what a neat rough exterior of the building. We got out and the sign said we were late for lunch to early for dinner. We thought maybe an appetizer and beverage. We were welcomed by Lynn who said we could eat in the bar or in the dining room with the table next to the window. That table had high back chairs which Shirleen loved.

Shirleen had a glass of Jacobs Creek cab with Shrimp Scampi, in a delicate white sauce heavy garlic and capers alongside fettuccini noodles with zucchini.
I had another Cadillac Margareta with a Monte Cristo which is a deep fried sandwich, rarely seen on a menu. It is three layers of sandwich with layers of turkey, ham and Swiss cheese and a little mayo with a side of freshly fried potato chips and some strawberry jam to dip the sandwich in. Wow, what a place to eat and reasonably priced. As I walked through the bar where our waitress was, a guy looked at me like he knew me, well he thought he did and she also, I looked like George, poor guy.

Time to look for a place to stay, none seen along the way so far, after traveling many miles. We saw the Aztec Inn, built in 1925 and is on the route and recommended. It is built in the heavy Aztec look. We took a look at a high end room $60. as we approached it she said there is no air conditioning, I thought I am beat from the heat, I really need some. The room was nice but we felt we needed the air.

We saw this Travelodge and said lets book it. It turned out to be nice; we did not eat dinner, just vegetated. Bye for now - Jerry
