April 6th - 7th Sun City area

4/6/10 Tuesday – in Sun City

Ate at a great restaurant – Bayrischer Hof on West Bell Road, Surprise Az. http://www.bayrischerhof.biz - What a delight. It turns they have owned the restaurant at Melrose and closed it and sold the one in Minneapolis by the same name. We have eaten at both and have had great food and this location carry’s the same tradition.

The walls are covered with many scene in Germany - many of which we have seen. Shirleen had her daily glass of cabernet wine I a Salvator Dopplebock. A refreshing draft beer for me, matter of fact so good I tried another.
Shirleen ordered the Jägerbraten - Pork Roast Hunter Style- served with Spätzle and red cabbage – two thick cut (each one inch thick pork loin), delightful soft spaetzles. Enjoyed with there lovely mushroom gravy along with the meal.

As I had these sausages in 1993 in Nürnberg Germany I wondered why the small sausages – here lies the answer – I ordered the Nürnberger Bratwurst lunch, six Pork Sausage served with Sauerkraut and Spaetzle. These sausages have a small length and diameter. The reason for the small size is that they had to fit through an old keyhole. Prisoners of the prison of Nürnberg in the middle ages could be supplied with food by their relatives. Restaurant owners could serve travellers through the keyhole of the restaurant entrance

We would love to go back for the Weiswurst and Schnitzel and much more.

On the menu I spotted an interesting drink - U-Boot (Submarine): Long drink glass filled with Light Beer and a bit of Coke, with a shot of Amaretto in a separate glass. Say a Toast then, dump the Amaretto into the glass. $ 6.50
at Surprise on Parkview Place

We made a visit to one of our bridge couples, Jane and Les. What a lovely house set against the green lawn with a pond and its many fountains in it. We sat on the patio with our refreshments. Before we play our couples bridge game we decide to grab a lunch. We went to a restaurant, can’t remember the name it was like Panera. It sure was a good place to eat; good chicken walnut sandwich, onion soup, large salads with a multitude of ingredients. I picked Napa cabbage, should have got the spinach like the rest. Now it is time for the main event, well they had a good night but the last hand was something else. I dealt and got the bid, now we are going down and the board has two cards, Perk 3 and Jane 1 and I 2; they decided for us to throw it in as I was going down I thought OK. Now the next hand is dealt, I had 8 spades and honors in it, I look at it and the other cards and boldly said – I don’t remember ever doing this before – on my first bid said 4 spades and got the bid and even made it. As Shirleen had the missing honor in spades plus a couple more and opening count. Even though we were beat handily that hand for me was great.
4/7/10 Wednesday in Mesa

We stopped by another bridge couple in Mesa, Sonie and Bob, their second year down here and have a park model selected for next year. We decided to lunch and drive round the city a little then do dinner after we checked in to our hotel. We stopped for dinner at the Organ Stop Pizza in Mesa; had a nice evening at this stop. We had some beer, wine and Pepperoni and a combination pizza.
What made this stop special was the organ playing. I don’t know how to describe it but the person comes up out of the floor to a stage playing the organ. In front of him is a glassed in area with the organ pipes showing through. When a note is hit a six inch glass door opens so you can hear each note and its place in the pipe spot. He played many patriotic songs and theme songs – school fight songs, Navy – Army - Air Force and Marine songs – along with an American flag coming out of the overhead. He played about a half hour. Tied in to the organ were many instruments, I think the organ played the music but the – like accordion bellowed and keys moved. There were bright lights and other flashy items. It would be a great place to take kids but us adults would benefit also. P.S. the pizza was good enough to come back for. http://www.organstoppizza.com/

Back to the house for bridge the women against the men. We thought that would be best as Sonie and Shirleen are bridge partners, we gave them some pointers and won the evening, they need more practice.
