Day 26 Wednesday March 31 at Yuma

We were at opposite ends of the city from John/Mary. In this case that is 14 miles, as the city runs long, about 98,000 full time residents and about a million snow birds in the county.
We drove out to there spot, a really nice lot being shared by the owner and them. It is surrounded by multicolored Mexican bricks about two feet high made out of chicken manure and clay. A great view, with palm trees waving and a slight breeze. We came into their coach, would show a picture but their last name is on the sign and that’s against our rules – so I just re-colored it. After coffee and cookies, and a lot of chatter, we drive into town for lunch.

We arrived at Julieanna’s Café, with both inside and outside seating and colorful parrots throughout. A light breeze and sunshine was a plenty. With the gals and their Pomegranate Spritz, us with our Margaritas to start the day. The appetizers, my favorite and John also orders each time Fried Calamari with sauces garlic aioli, marinara and sweet chili, and Caprese – layers of sliced fresh buffalo mozzarella and roma tomatoes with a pesto drizzled on top accompanied by crispy garlic crostini. A herbed bread with olive oil.

Shirleen ordered Spinach and Strawberry salad with cranberries, apples, candied walnuts, blue cheese, creamy strawberry dressing,
Mary a Chicken salad sandwich with apples, raisins, candied walnuts on cinnamon raisin bread, she said the cinnamon did the trick on this one.

John had a Prime Rib sandwich, a thick ¾ inch red succulent piece of meat – wow with fries,
I almost helped him but my Catfish with its cabbage salad with asian sauce on it and some great tasting coconut flavored rice – probably with milk.

Its time to do some sightseeing. Off to the west to see the fence between the US and Mexico.
It is outside of town about 10 miles, it becomes a dark line in the sand dunes, then as we get closer it becomes this 14 foot tall re-rod fencing. The dunes on the right side of us could have been used for any desert scene in Lawrence of Arabia.

Then out to the rocks on the desert, this is an area miles out in the desert away from the fence, for year’s people have gone across the bumpy desert roads and placed messages along the small hills written in rock. There must be thousands of these messages throughout the sand dunes. It sure helped riding in a big suburban, as these roads are washboardy, bumpy and twisty a great way to see the desert in the suburban.

We saw a different cactus – Ocotillo with its flowery red top.

As we are headed back from this foray into California we say a church set high on a manmade hill. Let’s explore, Mary sat in the suburban as it looked spooky.
The place was determined by a man who said it was the center of the World inside their Pyramid?? And honored is wife Felicity by naming the town after her. The people seemed very normal in action and speech, did not push us to go on the 3$ tour, but I ensured our escape by saying we’d have to check to see if our other passenger was well enough now to come along – Jerry’s line. We looked about the gift shop; it had all kinds of regular gift shop items, none of their own.

Then as we left we noticed an arm sticking out of a rock it was a depiction of Michelangelo’s hand in the Sistine Chapel being used as a sundial pointer. STRANGE place. Google it to see what’s up.

We went back to the coach for appetizers and drinks. Mary made a great tasting Jalapeño’s stuffed with a corn meal based stuffing. The peppers are halved and seeds picked out, then the combined items are baked for a short time.
Glad I got the recipe as they were simply delicious, glad number two son of theirs, Chris found the recipe. Mary embellishes the dish with sour crème as an accompaniment. Also had buffalo pemmican made in South Dakota and spicy pieces of mango. As we had not had enough as we were leaving Mary remembered the cordials they promised. Now we tasted two of them – a strawberry and one raspberry cordial, they are laced with vodka. Turns out this was a test, Mary made one and John the other. Shirleen liked the strawberry as to her it was smother, I the other – Mary’s Making – that’s a neat name for it.

Dinner at a close by restaurant - Da Boyz Pizza and Restaurant. Some cold drinks, and a number of beers then came Mary’s Speghette (their spelling) with meat sauce, Shirleen a cheese Manicotti, John and I tried to split a large pizza with the works plus pineapple and Jalapeno’s, all were tasty, good place to come to especially if you like your lightly sauced. Back for rest and more touring and eating.
